Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre requires a permanent full-time English as an Addiitonal Language Consultant. The position will be located in Saskatoon and commence on August 27, 2026.

Summary

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Consultant provides leadership, coordination, and expertise in the implementation and ongoing development of English as an Additional Language programming across Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre (Sask DLC). As a member of the Student Supports team, the consultant supports the administration, coordination, and supervision of EAL services to ensure consistent, equitable, and responsive supports for multilingual learners from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Working under the direction of the Superintendent of Student Supports, the EAL Consultant supports organizational processes related to student identification, language assessment, program placement, staff support, and Ministry reporting. The consultant works collaboratively with Campus Administrators, EAL Teachers, Student Support team members, families, and community partners to ensure multilingual learners have equitable access to learning and opportunities for success within Sask DLC’s digital learning environment. The consultant provides instructional leadership in second-language acquisition, supports staff in implementing evidence-based language development practices, and monitors the consistency and effectiveness of EAL programming across the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

Program Administration and Coordination

• Coordinate the implementation and ongoing refinement of Sask DLC’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 EAL programming.
• Lead the development and maintenance of departmental procedures related to student intake, identification, language assessment, placement, transition, and exit from EAL programming.
• Ensure EAL programming aligns with Saskatchewan Ministry expectations, inclusive education practices, and departmental processes.
• Monitor implementation of EAL programming across grade levels and campuses, identifying opportunities to improve consistency and responsiveness, and provide program updates and recommendations to the Superintendent of Student Supports.
• Support the development and implementation of EAL instructional programming, including synchronous language supports and secondary EAL course offerings.

Assessment, Data Collection, and Reporting

• Coordinate use of the Common Framework of Reference (CFR) for the identification, assessment, placement, and monitoring of English language learners.
• Develop and maintain effective processes and systems for collecting, documenting, and reporting student language proficiency data.
• Ensure compliance with provincial reporting requirements and Ministry timelines related to multilingual learners.
• Review student data, enrolment patterns, and program information, and support staff in using assessment data to inform programming and instructional decisions.

Coordination and Support of Staff

• Coordinate the implementation of EAL services across grade bands, campuses, and instructional teams.
• Provide leadership and guidance to EAL Teachers, classroom teachers, and other staff who support multilingual learners.
• Support onboarding, orientation, and role clarity for EAL instructional staff in collaboration with Campus Administrators.
• Monitor consistency in implementation of EAL instructional practices and provide guidance regarding the effective use of support staff within EAL programming.

Instructional Leadership and Professional Learning

• Provide instructional leadership to ensure staff implement evidence-based practices in second-language acquisition and language development.
• Develop and facilitate professional learning related to EAL instruction, culturally responsive teaching, language assessment, and instructional adaptations in an online learning environment.
• Guide the development of instructional resources, tools, and support materials for EAL programming across grade levels.
• Support staff in embedding language supports within Saskatchewan curriculum outcomes and applying the Adaptive Dimension to improve student access and participation.
• Stay current with research and emerging practices related to multilingual learners and online language instruction.

Collaboration and Partnerships

• Collaborate with Campus Administrators, Student Support Consultants, teachers, and other Student Support team members to ensure coordinated services for multilingual learners.
• Support communication and relationship-building with students, families, and learning mentors who are navigating the Canadian education system.
• Maintain working relationships with settlement agencies, cultural organizations, and other community partners that support newcomer and multilingual families.
• Represent Sask DLC on committees, working groups, or professional networks related to EAL programming when requested.

• Promote inclusive, culturally responsive, and strengths-based practices within EAL programming.
• Support staff in recognizing and valuing students’ linguistic, cultural, and lived experiences as assets in learning.
• Foster a welcoming learning environment where multilingual learners and families feel respected, supported, and connected while promoting equity, belonging, and accessibility for multilingual learners within Sask DLC’s digital learning environment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Deep understanding of additional-language acquisition, language development, and English language teaching methodologies.
• Demonstrated expertise in the Common Framework of Reference (CFR) and language proficiency assessment.
• Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching, inclusive education, and the Adaptive Dimension.
• Strong instructional leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach and build capacity in staff.
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities.
• Ability to design, implement, and evaluate system-level processes and procedures that ensure consistency, equity and alignment with organizational priorities.
• Skilled in maintaining confidentiality and managing sensitive student and staff information with integrity.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills.
• Ability to build collaborative relationships across campuses and teams.
• Proficiency with digital platforms used for communication, collaboration, instruction and data collection. (e.g. Microsoft Teams, Moodle).

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and valid teaching certification
• Valid Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB) and Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF) membership.
• Significant experience teaching English as an Additional Language in K-12 settings.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in supporting English language learners and mentoring staff.
• Master’s degree in education, Additional Qualifications Certificate – English as an Additional Language, or equivalent is preferred.

Employment Conditions

• Office environment/setting.
• Typical core office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Monday to Friday.
• Travel as required.
